JOB TITLE: Fitness Instructor
REPORTS TO: Program Director /or as assigned
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Assigned Director/Coordinator, the Fitness Instructor plans, prepares and instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance to YMCA policies and procedures.
Classes can range from Yoga, Zumba, Dance, and/or Strength training among other options.
All staff must strive to work cooperatively with fellow employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the YMCA.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):
Ensure a clean, safe, comfortable, and enjoyable environment for members and guests while they are participating in Health & Wellness programs
Demonstrate leadership capabilities and adaptability at the front of the class making each session fun and enjoyable while motivating participants
Based on class format, demonstrate the ability to move rhythmically to the beat of the music including the ability to incorporate optimal usage of cueing, tempo, choreography, and safe transitional, movements from one pattern to another
Responsible for service to members and participants by learning and using student's names and being available before and after class for questions from participants and parents; building effective relationships
Responsible for attending all scheduled classes; when an absence in unavailable, secures a substitute and provides guidance for that substitute
Constructively corrects members & class participants when incorrect or dangerous performance is observed
Demonstrates the highest level of safety in all activities
Represents the YMCA in a positive, professional manner always through adherence to the dress code and courtesy towards all members, guests, and staff
Responds to emergency and reports all incidents, as required
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Required:
Must be 18 years old
Each candidate will have a formal interview, which may include a written and practical assessment, to demonstrate knowledge and competency as a personal trainer.
Current national certification from ACE, ACSM, AFAA, YMCA, NSCA, NETA or Cooper Institute.
All on-boarding safety training
Ability to relate and communicate well with individuals of all ages, races, religions, and communities
Current CPR/AED/First Aid/O2 Certification.
Preferred:
At least six months of experience as a participant or teaching group fitness classes.
The ability to teach a variety of class formats is highly desirable
Flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends
Education in nutrition, physical education, public health, etc.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Bilingual - English/Spanish a plus
